Why Ready Trainer One exists.

Hi, I'm Nick, the developer of Ready Trainer One. I'm a runner — I stopped counting marathons after number 25 — and a full-time ski instructor. When I'm not on the slopes, I'm lifting in the gym. My fitness and athleticism have always been important to me. But my body composition hasn't always been conducive to my training or my goals.

I'm also a designer. I've spent most of my career working on healthcare, public health, and community health. Previously, I was the head of innovation at the Johns Hopkins Sibley Innovation Hub and at Kaiser Permanente. I'm the past chair of Stanford's Medicine X program. Design always starts with people and their needs. When technology can help, it must support people and their goals.

I built RTO for me. I wanted a tool that gave me insights about my training, my body, and my medications. I wanted something that would be low-friction and easy to use. And I wanted something that would be empowering — not judgmental or deferential. That's RTO.

RTO is also built on a principle that has been important in all of my professional work: every one of us deserves agency and autonomy in how we make choices about our lives, our bodies, and our health. RTO was designed from day one to adhere to a concept called Critical AI Health Literacy, as defined by Hugo Campos — a fierce advocate for patient empowerment and the coauthor of CAIHL as a Liberation Technology.
